Does anyone out there have any experience being a traveling physical therapist? My wife and I are looking into doing it and wondered about companies to choose, problems anyone has had, how it really works, if you liked it etc. Any help or information you can give us would be great!

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

I am in the same situation. Have you found out anything? I would love to know of PT's who have done traveling and what their experience was like.
Have you found any websites that give real information, not just job pitches?

Thanks,

John

I traveled for 18 months starting in 1996. It was one of the best career moves I ever made. There were two companies I traveled with - Health Care Everywhere and AMT - both were fairly generous and had good assignments. I have two friends who did travel together before they had children. They were able to save a lot of money and bought a new car in cash. My best advice is to sign up with at least 5 companies and keep in touch with each one regularly. Stand your ground on salary and housing standards. The company will move you if you are not satisfied with your apartment. Companies will love that you and your wife will be a team - very marketable to short staffed facilities. Good luck and enjoy!

Dave,
I am a medical recruiter for Platinum Select Staffing that specializes in travel placement opportunities for therapists. Right now the market is set up for someone like yourself to make plenty of money, while maintaining a stabilized work schedule. Typically a travel assignment last 13 months, while you are in your last month/half of work we will be submitting you to other assignments in your desired location. I would love to speak to you, as well as any others that are interested, about the amount of opportunities that we have.

Best regards,

Kevin Sacco

I have been traveling for the last 3-years and refuse to stop. I currently gross nearly $80000 annually as a PTA traveler. I don't tolerate the nonsense that perm employees must deal with. I feel as if I am the luckest person in the world.I have recruiters calling and emailing me with many offers daily. I have traveled with 8 different travel companies. They are all different yet they are all the same. They offer benifits in lieu of money. Make sure you get an hourly rate higher than if you were a perm and you must get a daily per diem and housing allowance or provided. Some travel companies ask me what I make and tell me that there is no way they can compete and they go away. I have done contracts for as little as a 1-week assignment and as long as 6-months. There are Army contracts that vary in lenght from 6-months to 5-years and offer lots of time off with pay. Overall this has been a fantastic opportunity for me. I travel with my wife and 2-children. World Health is top notch.

i am starting traveling the first week of December. right now i am only with one company, but i have a friend that runs a nursing traveling company and he told me you should have at least 3-5 companies. you cant forget two things. that you are the product they need to make money for themselves and that the more anemities you take the less you make. i am trying myself to learn how this whole things work. play hard ball. if they are too quick to agree then you are making it too easy on them. a used car salesman has to make a profit, but hopefully you wont let them take you for anymore than what is fair.

Read the comments from the married travelers. Any advice for a single PT with one year experience as a PT but none traveling. What can a PT make? Companies to consider? Is this a good way to gain experience and meet people? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

you can make as much as your willing to work for. as a 1 yr exp therapist you will probably make much more than you are now. you have to not only keep in mind the hourly rate, but the tax exempt perks (housing and food stipend), and the area in which you want to go. i think its a great for experience and contacts.

I would like to find out some information about travel physical therapy. I am considering it. What is the normal pay rate as a travel PT? What kind of facilities do you end up working in? Can you do outside continuing education? Do you have a chance to site see around the area?
Thanks for any information
